FAQ
Questions parents often ask
When should my child see a pediatric cardiologist?
If a pediatrician hears a heart murmur, or your child sweats or tires during feeding, gains weight poorly, has a bluish tinge around the lips, fast breathing, fainting, chest pain with exertion, or palpitations — or if there is a family history of congenital heart disease. In these cases a consultation and echocardiogram with a pediatric cardiologist is recommended.
Is a heart murmur in a child dangerous?
Not always. Most murmurs in children are "innocent" (functional) and do not affect the heart or need treatment. The only way to be sure is a clinical examination and an echocardiogram, which distinguishes an innocent murmur from one caused by a structural heart problem.
Does a pediatric echocardiogram hurt? Does it need sedation?
No. An echo is completely painless and uses no radiation — it is an ultrasound scan. Most children need no sedation; occasionally very young children who cannot stay still may need mild sedation, as decided by the doctor.
Are the echo and ECG done in the clinic?
Yes. Echocardiography and ECG are performed at the Heliopolis clinic by Prof. Dr. Waleed El-Guindy himself, during the same visit.
How do I choose a good pediatric cardiologist in Egypt?
Look for a consultant specialised specifically in pediatric cardiology, who performs the echo personally, has academic experience at a major university hospital, and explains the condition clearly. Prof. Dr. Waleed El-Guindy is Professor of Pediatric Cardiology at Ain Shams University and Head of the Pediatric Cardiology Unit, rated 5 stars by parents on Google.
